What Happens at an Immigrant Visa Interview
An immigrant visa interview is a conversation with a consular officer who decides the application. That much is general. Almost everything a couple actually wants to know about the day — whether the petitioning partner may come in, what may be carried through security, whether an interpreter is allowed, how accessibility requests are made, how long anything takes — is set by the individual embassy or consulate. This page describes what is genuinely common, and is explicit about what it will not invent.

The Department of State describes the interview as taking place at the embassy or consulate handling the case, with a consular officer, who decides the visa application. Applicants are told to prepare and to bring what the post asks for. Beyond that, the published material points to each post's own instructions rather than to a single national procedure — which is why the honest general description of the day is short.

The fields we will not print

The five questions below are the ones couples ask most, and they are precisely the ones a general page must not answer. In Togetherward they render only from the reviewed embassy record for your post, and only while that record is current. If it is missing, unpublished, stale, changed since review, or in conflict with itself, the field renders as not shown, with a link to the post's own page — never as an assumption, and never from a forum.
- Whether the petitioner may attend. Some posts permit it, some do not, and some allow it only in stated circumstances. Assume nothing.
- Security and what may be brought in. Phones, bags, and electronics are commonly restricted, and the restriction is local.
- Interpreters. Whether one is provided, permitted, or must be arranged, and any conditions, are the post's to state.
- Accessibility arrangements. How to request an adjustment, and what is available, is published locally where it is published at all.
- Rescheduling and passport return. Both are handled by the post, through the channel it names.
Read them on your post's page. Ours are collected under embassies, and where we have not reviewed a post yet, we say so instead of filling the gap.
Where the K-1 route differs

A K-1 interview is for a nonimmigrant visa for a fiancé(e), and the Department of State documents it separately from the immigrant visa interview: the application is a nonimmigrant one, the supporting material follows the K-1 process, and any accompanying K-2 child is part of that same arrangement. The logistics of the day — entry, security, interpreters, attendance — are still the post's, exactly as above. We note the route difference only where the official material treats it differently, and not as a second set of folklore.
Organising the day itself

- Travel and arrival planned the day before, not the morning of.
- One folder, in an agreed order, with an index at the front.
- Nothing carried that security may not allow — check the post's page, not a group chat.
- A plan for the phone, given that many posts restrict them and you may be unreachable for hours.
- A quiet plan for afterwards. Whatever happens, it is a long day and neither of you should be alone with it.
- Nothing scheduled immediately after. Duration is unknown and unknowable in advance.
None of this is required by anyone. It is organisation, and organisation is the only thing a couple actually controls on the day.

What we did not include
- Any universal sequence, duration, or list of questions. No such thing is published and inventing one would be misleading.

Common questions
- Can my partner come into the interview with me?
- That is decided by the post, and it differs. We show it only from a current reviewed record for your post, and show nothing when we do not have one. Check your post's own page before making any plan that depends on it.
- How long does an interview take?
- There is no published general answer, and posts vary widely. Plan for the day rather than for an hour, and do not schedule anything immediately afterwards.
- What questions will be asked?
- No list of interview questions is published, and we do not publish one either. Answer truthfully from your own memory and your own records; that is the whole of the preparation we suggest.
- Can I bring an interpreter?
- Interpreter arrangements are set by the post. Where we hold a current reviewed record for your post we show what it publishes; otherwise we show nothing and point you to the post.
- Will we know the outcome on the day?
- Sometimes an applicant is told something at the counter and sometimes a case continues in processing afterwards. Nothing on this page anticipates which, and nothing predicts a decision.
