After I-129F approval: NVC, the post, and DS-160
USCIS approval starts the next part of the K-1 process. NVC assigns a case number and forwards the petition to the embassy or consulate. The visa application and interview follow separately.
For: K-1 couples after petition approval, including families with K-2 applicants.
Written from official U.S. government sources. Last reviewed October 2026. Sources and limits.
At a glance
- NVC forwards the approved petition. Keep its case number and handoff notice.
- K applicants use DS-160. Each K-1 or K-2 applicant has a separate application.
- Follow the interviewing post. K processing is separate from immigrant-visa DS-260 and documentary qualification.

After approval, USCIS sends the petition to NVC. NVC assigns a case number and forwards it to the interviewing post. Its notice identifies the handoff; approval alone is not a visa. See State's K-1 process.

K-1 and K-2 applicants complete DS-160 and keep their confirmation pages. Follow the post's K instructions for appointments, payment, and submission. Do not substitute a spouse immigrant-visa DS-260 or NVC documentary-qualification checklist.

State's K-1 document and medical guidance distinguishes civil records, a panel-physician examination, and financial evidence. Form I-134 may be requested at the visa stage; I-864 belongs to the later adjustment stage. Local instructions and each applicant's facts control the details.
Keep one shared handoff record

- Keep the approval, NVC notice, and post correspondence in date order.
- Keep each applicant's DS-160 confirmation and medical arrangements distinct.
- For a case already at a post, use that post's official contact instructions. Togetherward support can help with the app.
